  2.     There is a problem in writing
  3. a book such as this on a still
  4. young and controversial field.
  5. One wants to present the body
  6. of knowledge and theory
  7. concerning which there is a
  8. high degree of consensus in
  9. order to represent most
  10. accurately the state of the art.
  11. But, when there is much
  12. disagreement even about what
  13. are the important facts, that is
  14. difficult to do. Moreover, a
  15. theoretically neutral book
  16. presenting either no
  17. speculation at all or all sides of
  18. every issue can make dull
  19. reading. I have thus tried to
  20. steer a middle course: Describe
  21. the perceptual phenomena that
  22. most investigators consider
  23. important, discuss the major
  24. theories that have been
  25. proposed to explain them, and
  26. give my own point of view and
  27. the evidence supporting it.
  28. When I advance a somewhat
  29. idiosyncratic theory or
  30. speculation, I say so.
